What is Silicone Compression Molding?
Silicone compression molding, also known as Rubber Compression Molding, silicone compression molding, which widely used to produce different shaped of elastomer silicon rubber molded parts & products. Silicone compression molding, not only can produce simple design & structure seal, but also can produce precision compression molded products, mainly depends on mold plate process controls etc. Silicone compression mold is one of the most cost-effective tool to make rubber seal or the silicone rubber parts.we can run low volume production for customer with rapid tooling, the lead time is about 2-3 weeks.
The Process of Silicone Compression Molding
Silicone compression molding process is more simple once compared to LSR injection molding, silicone transfer molding or extrusion molding.  

Firstly, we will manufacture a compression mold with CNC machining and polishing. In simple silicone parts design, there will be a two plates mold includes a cavity side and a core side. Then, mold plates will be assembled and inserted into a compression molding machine.
After that, silicone materials like HCR (High Consistency Rubber) or LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) will be loaded into mold plates, compression machines will set heat and pressure with according time, allow silicone materials to spread throughout mold cavities and solidify.
Finally, release pressure from compression press, then separate mold plates and remove silicone parts. This is a normal compression molding cycle for simple silicone parts.

Below are the many advantages of silicone compression molding:
  • The loss of raw material is minimal and will not cause too much loss, usually 2% to 5% of the product quality.
  • The internal stress of the end product is low as well as a small warping deformation while the mechanical properties are stable.
  • The life of the mold cavity is small with a low maintenance cost.
  • Molding equipment also costs less and the mold structure is simpler. You can produce multiple cavities at a low price and compared to injection molding it has a lower manufacturing cost.
  • It is suitable for large flat products. The size of the products that can be molded through this method is determined by the mold clamping force of the mold pressing machine and the size of the mold plate.
  • If you require parts in batches, compression molding is suitable at a relatively low price.
  • Molds that have a high number of cavities can be placed on a certain plate to improve productivity.

Compression Molding FAQs

The compression molding process can be broken down as follows:

  • Design and fabricate a mold around the exact specifications of the desired component.
  • Heat the mold and place the specified material into the preheated mold, and close the mold.
  • Apply extremely high pressure to the material in the mold to remove air and fill all available space, so that even the most detailed components are completed to a high degree of accuracy.
  • Allow the material to cure and solidify, then remove from the mold cavity.

Although injection molding and compression molding are similar, they exhibit some distinct differences:
Injection molding is ideal for small parts, while compression molding can be used for much larger components. Injection molding is faster, as it does not require the same amount of finishing work.

Compression molding equipment has excellent production capacity and gains economies of scale through multi cavity tooling, which makes it better for high-volume production runs. Compression molding equipment is easier to repair and maintain than injection molding.
