Rapid prototype tooling is a kind of quick turnaround and economical tooling which makes with modern high speed,accuracy machining equipment, simplifed and reliable tooling design option and effective machining procedure in very short lead time and match part  specification of design in precision and quality.

As the tide wave of innovation, prototype tooling is more and more widely used in product research and development and prototype creating and market test. because of its fast and low cost, and reliable precision and quality, much better than traditional tooling with long lead time and high cost and also popular modern prototyping process with the wide limitation of material and precision. More and more customers have been highly recognized the advantage of prototype tooling and low volume production after they cooperated with Hord several times. 

Over the past ten years, Hord technical team has been focusing on the research, design, making prototype tooling, constantly summarizing the experience, and created a set of special standards for prototype tooling making, in order to achieve the balance of quality, speed and cost for the maximum benefit of customers, and reduce the cost to the maximum extent and achieve win-win results with customers.

Hord's Rapid prototype tooling usually has the following characteristics:

1.  Shared standard moldbase, ensure their exchange and reuse, reduce the lead time and cost of tooling.Moldbase of traditional tooling needs to be ordered from moldbase supplier, lead time is 3-10 days.The cost of moldbase is high, especially in recent years, the price of steel has been rising continuously, resulting in a 30% increase in the price of moulds.

2.  Tooling components shall be standardized to the maximum extent. People who have experience in tooling manufacturing are very clear.However, because traditional toolings are custom ordered facilities, so cavity & core inserts, sliders, lifters,ejector plate etc are unique, which are most of the toolings cost. In order to save the cost for the customer as much as possible, in recent years, Hord has gradually included the standard range of slider and lifters, to shorten lead time and save cost of tooling for customer.

3.   After fully understanding part specification and customers' expectations for tooling life and sample delivery time, Hord technical team will provide a professional and economical solution within 24 hours.

4.   Base on the prototype tooling required from product research and development stage, so it’s hard to avoid any engineering change after samples run. All prototype tooling made by Hord is to make change, but there is some cost happened that customer need to charge if it’s from customer’s reason. 

5.   Prototype tooling life in Hord is generally 500-50,00 times. If tooling steel is P20 or NAK80, the tooling life could be up to 50,000. We will confirm with customer during quoting which is best for customer.

6.   Lead time of prototype tooling is usually 1-2 weeks. For complex or large size, it takes longer, but not longer than 4 weeks.

7.   Because prototype tooling almost use shared moldbase, the price did not include shared moldbase in tooling price, so shared moldbase is Hord’s property. However,cavity and core insert, slider core or lifters were ordered by customer. After the customer pays off,all belong to the customer's property.If the customer requests to remove the mold, Hord will need to charge additional cost for standalone moldbase and other shared components.

8.   The free storage time of prototype tooling in Hord is two years. If there is no any molding order after two years, the tooling shall be scrapped after confirmation with the customer, otherwise the customer agrees to pay for the maintenance and storage.

9,   all the Rapid prototype tooling before go ahead making, a professional detail DFM report will be provided to customer to confirm, like the parting line, the gate location and size,ejector location, draft, wall thickness, critical tolerance etc. that will reduce the risk of defect or mistake.

Prototype Tooling Processes
Design for Manufacturability Analysis
Provide a detail DfM(design for manufacturability analysis) to show all the detail information,e.g. parting lines, gate position and size, ejector position, wall thickness, surface finishing, tolerances and potential sink mark, gate mark warpage etc. 
Tooling Machining & Fitting

After DfM approval,cut steel and machining with different machines, like Gun Drilling,CNC, EDM, Wirecutting, finally tooling master collect all components together for mold fitting and polishing, ready the tooling before mold trial.

Tooling Trials and Quality Inspection
Molding Master prepare and dry material,get the machine to required temperature, test the tooling from 10% filling to 110% filling. Finally Project engineers check and send 5 complete shots to QC department to check the quality and dimensions inspection.

In order to machine fast and reduce the cost, the following materials will be selected.

No.1 Hard Aluminum7075

Aluminum 7075 can be fast machined and smaller features can be used for tiny featureand reduce EDM job.It is one of the strongest aluminum alloys with strengths comparable to many steels. it's hardness is about 90~120HBW, After hard anodizing, it can be 350HV or more. So Aluminum 7075 is the most common material for rapid prototype tooling, tooling life can be guaranteed from 500 up to 5000 shots

No.2 Carbon structural steel, 1050 (S50C)

 This is the most economical steel for rapid tooling. And the tooling life should be longer for Aluminum 7075. Also very easy to machine.
